    Because dreams are thought to be the brain’s attempt to cope with difficult and often distressing emotions, some psychologists and psychiatrists worry that dream groups might cause harm if traumatic events are exposed and not treated delicately.

    “Dreams are a very powerful and potentially explosive phenomenon,” said Patrick McNamara, an associate professor of neurology and psychiatry at Boston University and author of “Nightmares: The Science and Solution of Those Frightening Visions During Sleep.” “Dreams should not be shared with anyone who doesn’t have due regard for their complexity and respect for their profound sacredness.”
